For some years now the Anglican Diocese of Central Tanganyika and the Tanzanian government have been working together towards a better future for the blind and visually-impaired. A small number of students from Buigiri Primary School for the Blind (another joint Diocesan/Government enterprise) who pass their leaving exam are sponsored to attend DCT Mvumi Secondary School.
Now, approximately 25-30 blind/visually-impaired students attend the school, the majority graduates of Buigiri and a few from other parts of Tanzania where there is little or no provision for disability.
The VI students face particular academic and environmental challenges and, while the dedicated specialist staff are provided by the Government, most resources have to be found through charitable means.
The VI students are taught in mainstream lessons and, encouraged by fellow sighted students, follow up their learning in the purpose-built VI unit. Magnifying equipment for those with some vision and Braillers for those totally blind will assist the students’ progress though the education system.
LLBS has been supporting the school by sending equipment the Society can no longer use and any donations are always welcome.
